The Hargreaves Foundation supports The Outward Bound Trust

July 2024

The Trustees of The Hargreaves Foundation are delighted to announce their support towards the Outward Bound Trust, awarding them funding to secure 156 young people a place on their Mark Scott Leadership for Life Award program.

Outward Bound work with up to 25,000 young people every year to develop their life skills, aspirations, and mental wellbeing through adventurous outdoor education and social action - over 80% of these course participants are granted bursary support. During an Outward Bound course, young people take part in challenging, adventurous activities, such as rock climbing, overnight mountain expeditions, and a range of water-based activities including canoeing and gorge walking. All activities are underpinned with specific learning outcomes, creating opportunities for young people to build their personal, social and emotional skills. Individualised review sessions allow focus on genuine learning for life at home and in school that simply cannot be met in the classroom.

Funding will go towards supporting 156 young people secure a place on the 2024/25 Mark Scott Leadership for Life Award program. With 50% of the young people being drawn from the 30% most deprived areas, this project helps disadvantaged young people develop social confidence, self-belief, aspiration and citizenship, through participating in an active outdoor residential and then completing a self-guided group project for the benefit of their community.

Young people need to develop qualities such as resilience, communication, confidence, leadership, and self-belief to overcome life’s challenges and achieve their potential, and with support from The Hargreaves Foundation, Outward Bound will empower many young people with these skills.
