The Hargreaves Foundation supports Stride UK Foundation

October 2024

The Trustees of The Hargreaves Foundation are pleased to announce that funding has been allocated to Stride UK Foundation, a charity which specialises in elevating sport as a catalyst for change.

Working with around 800 young people from the top 10% areas of deprivation across Greater Manchester, STRIDE UK has ambitions to provide every young person who attends their sessions with opportunities that reduce the disparities between different areas of the city. Currently they run a variety of programmes including a bespoke educational programme, a dedicated sport programme, and a targeted mentoring programme. They also run weekly after-school sessions in deprived communities, which include multi-sport activities, food, music, and mental health support.

The funding from The Hargreaves Foundation will be used to deliver three sessions a week at their Powerhouse Hub over the period of a year, estimated to engage 180 young people aged 7-18 years. These sessions will be completely free of charge and will give young people opportunities to achieve Assessment and Qualification Alliance (AQA) accredited and Sports Leaders UK qualifications. Young people have opportunities to then take part in additional STRIDE UK pathways with specific sport coaching and can become STRIDE UK volunteers or coaches. Through engagement with STRIDE UK Hubs, they not only gain qualifications but practical skills for life such as effective communication, teamwork, roles and responsibilities, money, budgeting and managing stress.
