The trustees of the Hargreaves Foundation are pleased to announce that funding has been awarded to Let’s Do More, an organisation working to change lives and create opportunity through basketball. Let’s Do More provides basketball opportunities for young people living in the most deprived communities of Leeds. Removing barriers to sport, such as cost, cultural exclusion, and lack of local access, allows participants to build long-term pathways into education, employment, and healthier lifestyles.
The Hargreaves Foundation’s funding will allow Let’s Do More to provide a year-round, free of charge basketball and leadership development programme for girls aged 7-17. Alongside providing two weekly basketball sessions, participants aged 11-17 will complete introductory officiating or refereeing qualifications. Furthermore, older participants will be given the opportunity to support other Let’s Do More teams, providing a pathway into leadership roles within sport.
A previous Let’s Do More project demonstrated clear demand for trauma-informed, female-led activity, with over 180 girls taking part, 80% of whom had never played before. Without early access to safe, empowering activities, many girls disengage from sport entirely. This affects their physical health, mental wellbeing, and opportunities for future involvement in education or employment. All sessions and qualifications are free to remove financial barriers. Sessions are delivered in a culturally trusted location by female coaches who reflect the communities Let’s Do More serve. The programme ensures girls feel safe, seen, and supported.
