The Trustees of The Hargreaves Foundation are pleased to announce that funding has been awarded to Lawrence Weston Community Farm to help support their forest school sessions and free activities.
Working on the fringes of Bristol, which includes some of the most deprived areas in England, Lawrence Weston Community Farm aims to support local people experiencing deprivation to make long-lasting, positive changes to their lives through access to nature, wildlife and farming. They welcome around 22,000 visits per year, and offer volunteering places, programmes for children and young people, work experience, weekly groups and short courses.
Funding from The Hargreaves Foundation will allow the farm to run weekly forest school sessions for 8-12-year-olds living in poverty during the school holidays, and to provide free positive activities that teach life and personal skills. This project will target those eligible for benefits-related free school meals and/or with specific issues such as a disability or mental health condition. Sessions will cater for up to 20 children, offering three hours of outdoor activity, including forest play, learning about nature and interacting with the farm’s animals. Drinks, a snack and a healthy lunch will also be included, with children given the opportunity to learn about food production at the farm and to taste farm-grown produce including herbs, vegetables, fruit and honey.
