The Trustees of The Hargreaves Foundation are pleased to announce that Basecamp Adventure Trust has been granted funding to support their work empowering disadvantaged young people to develop crucial life skills through outdoor education - so they can ultimately thrive in their futures.
Basecamp Adventure Trust takes disadvantaged young people from Leeds struggling with poor mental health on an exhilarating and impactful year-long journey that transforms their sense of self. Their six-module curriculum, grounded in four core pillars of personal development, uses the powerful vehicle of outdoor education to teach life skills and improve our young people’s wellbeing to have a profound impact on their lives and futures.
Throughout the programme, young people are supported and celebrated by trained Basecamp coaches who offer individualised mentoring and encourage reflection on their lessons and Basecamp experience. By blending a deeply relational approach with outdoor education, personal development lessons are delivered in an accessible and fun way, so young people can practically develop their confidence and self-esteem by pushing themselves out of their comfort zone.
Basecamp told us, “One young person from our previous cohort lived in one of the most deprived areas in Leeds and struggled behaviourally at school but underwent transformational change on our programme”. Their parent added, “the entire family have commented on how he has come out of his shell…he gets so excited for Basecamp his bags are packed 2 weeks before a trip!”.
This grant will fund five places on the programme, and unlock committed match funding, meaning 10 young people can access the programme.
