The Trustees of The Hargreaves Foundation are pleased to announce funding for Action Tutoring, a charity that has supported over 30,000 disadvantaged children and young people in unlocking their full potential through cost-effective, evidence-based tutoring.
Action Tutoring is an award-winning national education charity with a vision of a world in which no child’s life chances are limited by their socio-economic background. Unfortunately, education in this country is failing pupils living in poverty. Pre-pandemic, it was estimated by the Education Policy Institute (EPI) that it would take until 2070 to close the attainment gap; with school closures, this gap is now at its widest in 12 years. Action Tutoring work in partnership with non-selective state schools and harness the power of volunteer tutoring to run impactful Maths and English tutoring programmes that close this academic attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their more affluent peers and move them closer to SAT and GSCE success. In these programmes, pupils are supported by volunteer tutors, working in groups of 1:2 or 1:3, and are guided through Action Tutoring resources created by curriculum experts. Sessions generally last for one-hour and are overseen by an Action Tutoring Programme Coordinator, who provides logistical and developmental support for both pupils and volunteers.
Action Tutoring want to keep delivering these impactful tutoring programmes that help set disadvantaged children and young people on a strong trajectory for achieving in secondary school, or opening the doors to further education, employment and training. In support, The Hargreaves Foundation is offering funding that will contribute to the delivery of 15 programmes across Bristol partner schools over the course of three-academic years. This will give up to 300 pupils in preparatory years for SATs and GSCEs access to 10-20 hours of free tuition that will boost their chance of success and break the cycle of poverty.
